THE OLD TESTAMENT #26

*Joshua 2, 6 ~ 8
1: This is the town of Jericho. We'll need to get through here if we want to reach Canaan.
3: It looks so fortified!
4: There's no way for an outsider to slip through!
5: But we need to get inside somehow and find out what sort of defenses they've got. We'll be at a disadvantage if we attack without any information...
6: What the?
2: I knew it the moment I saw you! You're Israelites, right?
3: The town's filled with rumors about you.
4: You performed a miracle and defeated the Egyptian army! That's more than enough to convince me that you have some great power on your side.
5: That's why I've decided... to believe in whatever power you've been blessed with.
SFX: KNOCK KNOCK
3: Patrolling a prostitute's house, huh? I know what you're up to!
4: Did you see any suspicious persons come this way?
5: I saw a few new customers, but they already left!
6: Alright! Find them!
7: Thanks! You saved us!
8: Yeah, because I'm putting my bets on the power of your LORD, not this town!
1: My name is Rahab. If you end up attacking this town and destroying it, you'll save me, right?
2: We promise to save you. You hid us, after all!
3: Drop a red cloth outside your house so that we know not to attack it.
4: Thanks to Rahab, we learned what the town is like.
5: It'll be tough to attack it, because its wall is too high to climb. And the entrance is too narrow...
1: If we try and force our way in, we'll end up making too many sacrifices...
2: What should we do, Joshua?
3: How can we defeat them?
6: The LORD is on your side!
1: You don't need to force your way through. All you need to do is heed my words,
2: and a single man will be able to crumble the wall of Jericho.
4: Have the priests carry the Ark of the Covenant and walk around the town. Thn have your soldiers follow them.
5: All they need to do is make a full circle around the wall. Continue that for six days.
6: Hey... look!
1: There are those Israelites marching around the wall again... is that all they're going to do? If they want something, they should just say so! Hahaha!
2: Walk around the wall seven times on the dawn of the seventh day.
3: And then...
4: When you finish the seventh circle, blow a ram's horn long and hard.
5: PWOOOOOOH PWOOOOOH
6: When that sound reaches your soldiers,
7: let them all release a war cry at once.
1: If this cry reaches me,
2: a single man will be able to crumble the wall.
3: If you charge through the area where it crumbles, victory will be yours.
1: And so...
2: with Joshua leading them, the Israelites destroyed those who stood in their way,
3: Mt. Nebo, where Moses died
7: Mediterranean Sea
8: Sinai Peninsula
9: Red Sea
10: and they reached the promised land.
11: But after this, their battles with neighboring forces continued...
1: About Jericho
2: Joshua obeyed the LORD, and so Jericho fell.
3: The moral of this story, "believe in the LORD, and he will fulfill his promises," is a key message in the Book of Joshua.
4: After Jericho, they did battle with a town called Ai, and even though the LORD was on their side, they still lose.
5: Did you break your promise to us, LORD?!
6: You're the ones who broke your promise. When you defeated Jericho, I told you not to collect any of the spoils for yourself, but to burn them and offer them up to me instead, but one of you disobeyed me! I will abandon all those who fail to keep their promises!
7: Wh... what?!
1: Later, Joshua discovered that a man from the tribe of Judah named Achan had kept gold, silver, and fine silk for himself.
2: The LORD sees everything!
3: And so, Achan and his family were stoned to death.
4: Joshua attacked Ai once more. Since they had defeated Joshua's army already, they were overconfident, and were destroyed by Joshua's desperate assault.
5: "Believe in the LORD as your one, absolute master, and keep your promises to him, and you will be saved." "Those who break their promises will be abandoned by the LORD."
The people repent for what they've done, and the LORD protects them again
The people start taking the LORD for granted and neglect Him
The LORD abandons them
The people repent
6: It's just this cycle over and over again, isn't it?
7: To be continued in Volume 3
