3. The Early Years of David
*1 Samuel 16 ~ 18
1: The high priest Samuel has come all the way to our lowly town of Bethlehem?!
2: The tribe of Judah is honored at your presence!
3: The LORD has commanded me to perform this ritual at your house, Jesse.
4: Are those your sons?
1: They all look so beautiful and smart. Is the chosen among them?
2: No, Samuel! He is not! Jesse has one more son!
3: The LORD tells me that you have one more son...
4: Um, yes.
5: My youngest. He is still a child, though.
6: I thought he wasn't fit to come and meet you, so I left him in charge of the sheep.
3: Hey, David! Your father's calling for you!
1: Samuel! That boy is the one you should anoint with olive oil!
3: This is my youngest son, David.
4: I hereby anoint you with this olive oil in the name of the LORD.
6: He... he's still a child! But Samuel is a high priest and a prophet, remember? If he says it must be done, then...
1: I don't really understand what's going on, but it seems like the LORD has chosen David for something! It's amazing...
1: What happened?
2: Suddenly, I can see so much clearer!
4: I heard rumors that my father's troops having been taking spoils of war for themselves.
5: Are they going against the LORD's teachings?
1: I, Saul, am the one who the LORD anointed!
2: Would you dare to complain to the LORD Himself?
4: Excuse me!
5: Jonathan, did you anger your father again?
7: Father was anointed by the LORD! You cannot defy him!
8: I know. But...
1: I can feel light and power filling my body!
3: Suddenly, it feels like all the strength...
4: is leaving my body...
1: I feel like I might lose my next battle... no! I can't! The LORD is behind me!
2: But... why don't I have any confidence, then?
3: You will be the next king, but...
4: we need to make sure that King Saul doesn't find out what is happening until the LORD instates you as the new ruler. If he finds out, he will kill you as one who aims to steal his position from him.
5: What's happened to me? I don't understand... but I'm frightened!
1: Winter has passed, and spring has come...
2: Yet the King is still depressed.
3: What happened to him?
4: Is his heart ailing?
5: I've heard that music is good for illnesses that ail the mind.
6: I don't have any other ideas, so we'll just have to give it a try.
7: Is there anyone capable of playing music that can soothe the heart? Search the entire kingdom!
1: I am David, son of Jesse from Bethlehem.
2: He is famous as a skilled player of the harp.
1: LORD, we are your sheep. You lead us to fields and water.
2: When we go astray, you whip us and correct our paths, because you love us. And Your love is great.
1: Please stay with us forever.
3: Guide us with your will, O LORD.
4: Who is that?
5: I am David, from Bethlehem.
7: Please, become my musician.
8: Yes, your majesty.
1: The King has been in good spirits lately, thanks to David's music.
2: Isn't it boring to stand there and watch me work?
4: I'm very interested in the work that a king must do. I can learn a lot watching you.
5: You really are a hard worker!
1: Oh no! It's the Philistines! They sent out Goliath, a man of monstrous strength!
2: Having a war would only mean great economic losses for both of us,
3: so let's have our strongest men fight as our representatives!
1: Hiieee! Goliath is a giant! No man is as strong as him!
2: He's unstoppable!
3: Don't any of you have enough courage to face him?!
4: Whoever defeats Goliath may marry my daughter!
5: And you won't be taxed!
6: Will no one come out? Is every Israelite a coward?!
1: Saul! Please, let me fight!
2: But you're still a child!
3: Just because someone is large, it doesn't mean they will automatically win every battle.
4: Hey, runt! Aren't you even going to bring a spear or a sword with you?!
5: David... are you sure he's going to be all right?!
6: So be it! I'll feed you to the birds just like the rest of them!
1: I don't need a spear or sword.
2: The LORD will lead me to victory!
3: Graaahhh! That made-up god of yours can't do anything to me!
1: W... waaahh!!
2: David won!!
3: Hiiieee! Goliath's been defeated! We're done for!
4: Destroy the Philistines! Israel has David! We're victorious!
1: Israel has achieved a great victory!
2: Now we won't have to fear the Philistines any more!
3: David is our hero!
4: He's still a child, but he has more courage than any other! He's so strong!
5: He may be even stronger and capable than King Saul himself! Ssshh...
1: Saul has slain thousands, and David his tens of thousands!
2: If this continues, my position will fall into jeopardy!
3: I need to kill David before this gets out of hand!
